Welcome to this week’s edition of CIOsurge!
This week:
Twenty-six IT leaders joined us in Los Angeles to dissect how AI is reshaping the threat landscape, reinforcing that peer exchange remains one of the strongest defenses against rapid change.
AWS’ exclusive OpenAI Frontier partnership signals a new phase in the AI platform race, where ecosystem control and enterprise guardrails may matter more than raw model performance.
Data shows AI literacy is the real ROI unlock, organizations that invest in structured upskilling are nearly twice as likely to see meaningful returns from AI initiatives.
Let’s make this week a game-changer.
Stay sharp. Stay ahead.
Inside our LA Roundtable on AI Threats
Last week in Los Angeles, 26 IT leaders came together for a CIOsurge dinner on navigating the AI threat landscape, with Nick Reva of DoorDash helping lead the conversation.
The discussion centered on real-world cybersecurity challenges and the opportunities emerging as AI adoption moves faster across the enterprise. The energy and insight in the room reinforced what makes this community valuable, leaders helping leaders stay ahead of what’s next.
We’re looking forward to building on that momentum through future CIOsurge events.
AWS secures enterprise AI edge with exclusive OpenAI Frontier deal
AWS will exclusively distribute OpenAI Frontier under a multiyear partnership that includes up to $100 billion in expanded infrastructure commitments. The deal integrates Frontier with Amazon Bedrock and AgentCore, positioning AWS as a strategic platform for agentic AI while strengthening its enterprise standing against Microsoft and Google.
This shifts the AI platform conversation. Frontier is not just another model API. It adds governance, identity, observability, and stateful agent capabilities that enterprises actually need to operationalize AI at scale. When that layer sits exclusively on AWS, it materially changes platform calculus for CIOs evaluating long-term AI architecture.
The strategic question is no longer which model performs best. It is which ecosystem offers the cleanest path to production with enterprise controls baked in. This partnership strengthens AWS’ claim to be that foundation. If your AI roadmap includes agentic workflows and persistent runtime environments, you need to assess whether consolidating around AWS simplifies or concentrates risk in ways your board will care about.

AI literacy proves decisive in unlocking ROI
Organizations with mature data and AI upskilling programs are nearly twice as likely to report significant ROI from AI investments, according to DataCamp research. While only about 20% of leaders overall see strong returns, that figure rises to 42% among companies with structured AI literacy efforts, underscoring the link between workforce capability and AI value realization.
The spending wave around AI is massive, but this data reinforces something we see firsthand: tools alone do not generate returns. If employees cannot interpret outputs, validate results, or integrate AI into daily workflows, the investment stalls at the pilot stage.
For CIOs, this shifts the mandate from technology deployment to capability development. AI literacy now belongs alongside core enterprise skills. Partnering closely with L&D and building structured, measurable upskilling programs may be the most reliable lever we have to convert AI enthusiasm into sustainable business impact.
